We hear, “The shower went cold,” “the tank is leaking,” or “the water looks rusty.” Those calls usually mean the water heater needs an inspection to determine whether a new unit is the right answer.

We check the tank, supply lines, drain valve, venting, and electrical or gas connections before planning an installation. A planned replacement can be scheduled, but a leaking tank should not wait because water can damage flooring, drywall, and nearby cabinets.

Cold showers and rusty water

People often call about no hot water at the shower, rusty water from a faucet, a rumbling tank, or a puddle beneath the heater. A gas unit may also make a clicking sound without lighting, while an electric unit may produce only lukewarm water.

Hot water that runs out sooner than usual can point to a worn heating element, a damaged dip tube, sediment in the tank, or a heater that no longer fits the household demand. A visible leak may come from a valve, a supply connector, or the tank shell itself.

These signs can look alike from the kitchen or bathroom, but the fault behind them changes the required parts, labor, and installation scope. We inspect the heater and its connections before identifying what needs to be replaced.

Tank inspection and hookup

At the tank inspection, we read the model plate, confirm the fuel type, and measure the heater space, doorway, and access route. We check the cold-water shutoff, hot-water outlet, drain valve, pressure relief valve, and the gas vent or electrical circuit.

We also test water pressure with a gauge and look for corrosion on supply lines and fittings. The inspection commonly takes about 20 to 40 minutes. A straightforward like-for-like tank replacement commonly takes two to four hours once the correct heater is on site.

We can often disconnect the old tank, set the new heater, reconnect approved fittings, and test hot water during the same visit. A job needing a new vent route, electrical work, a platform change, or permit sign-off may need a separate installation date.

Tank access and shutoff valves

Tank age, closet access, and the shutoff valve all affect the installation work. An older heater can have corroded connectors, outdated venting, or fittings that do not match a current replacement unit.

A heater in a tight closet, attic, garage corner, or upper-floor utility room may require more protection for walls, flooring, and the access path. A seized water shutoff can add work before the old tank can be removed safely.

The replacement unit itself also matters. Gas vent material, electrical connections, drain-pan needs, and a required inspection or sign-off can change the materials and work needed for the installation.

Model plate and closet access

Find the model number on the rating plate attached to the side of the water heater. The plate also shows the fuel type, capacity, and electrical or gas specifications.

Tell us the room where the tank sits and whether it is in a closet, attic, garage, or utility room. Let us know if water is running from the tank, the pressure relief valve, or a nearby pipe.

A photo of the heater, vent pipe, and doorway can help us plan for the right replacement and access equipment. Call Round Rock Plumbing Company at (512) 882-1291 before a tank leak spreads into the floor, wall, or cabinet.
